Each year many people from around the world choose Canada and Alberta as their new home. These people come to Canada from countries all around the world.
THE TASK
You have been asked to write an article for your local newspaper about new Canadians in a city near you. Your editor has asked you to tell the readers where these new Canadians have come from and which city they choose to live in. Your article should tell readers how many people come from each area of the world (e.g. Asia, Europe) to live in that city. Also give some examples of countries in those areas of the world.

Where Do New Canadians Come From?

THE PROCESS
- Choose a city near you to use for your article.
- To find out the total number of people who came from each area of the world to your city, visit Immigrant Population: Statistics Canada Data. Now select your city of choice from the table. Please, choose one of the cities in Alberta.
- Use the table from the website and the Where Do New Canadians Come From? worksheet given to help you organize your information. Use addition to find how many people come from Europe and Asia. Please, record do your calculations on the extra sheet provided. I want to see your work!
- To complete Part 2 of the worksheet, go to http://www.atlas.gc.ca/. You will be able to use this online atlas to find countries that are in each of the listed regions. Click on “Reference Maps” and select International. Select the region you want to look at, and choose to download PDF version of the map (these maps are more detailed). Try to list at least 4-5 countries in each region.
- Write three interesting statements. Where do most of the new Canadians in the selected city come from? Which continent?
- Write your newspaper article. Your article should have
- an introduction paragraph (introducing the topic, also tell us where your parents, grandparents or grandgrand parents came from)
- a paragraph describing data (your numbers)
- a paragraph analyzing data ( your interesting statements and answering questions)
- a conslusion paragraph
- What's the difference in number of people who come from Europe and from Asia to live in the selected city?
- What's the difference in number of people who come from Europe and from United States to live in the selected city?
